Your subscription
Pricing, the free trial, Apple billing, canceling, the 7-day grace window, restoring on a new device, and switching modes.
Basis Budget is $4.99/month with a 1-month free trial. This chapter covers what the subscription gets you, how the trial works, how billing happens, how to cancel, and what changes when you do.
What's included
One subscription, all features. There's no separate “basic tier” or paywalled extras. You get:
- Manual transaction entry. Type in transactions as you spend, or batch-add at the end of the day. Useful for accounts Plaid can't reach (HSAs at smaller institutions, foreign banks, manual investments).
- Bank sync via Plaid. Automatic transaction imports from your linked bank accounts. Most US banks supported.
- Apple Wallet integration. Apple Card and Apple Savings connect through Apple Wallet rather than Plaid — no separate login.
- Both budgeting modes. Zero-Based and Spending Limits. Switch between them anytime without losing data.
- Net worth tracking, reports, transaction splits, app lock. All included.
The free trial
Signing up starts a 1-month free trial. Apple doesn't charge anything until the trial ends. If you cancel before that point, you won't be charged at all.
Apple sends you a reminder a few days before the trial ends so you can decide. If you do nothing, the subscription rolls into the paid $4.99/month and renews monthly until you cancel.
How billing works
All billing happens through your Apple ID. We don't handle your payment details; Apple does. That means:
- Charges show up on whatever payment method you have set up with Apple
- Receipts come from Apple, not from us
- Billing disputes go through Apple's refund process
- You can view, pause, or cancel the subscription entirely from iOS
To manage the subscription, go to:
iOS Settings › Apple ID (your name at the top) › Subscriptions › Basis Budget
From there you can see your next renewal date, change payment methods, or cancel.
Canceling
Head to the path above and tap Cancel Subscription. Apple handles it immediately. You keep access until the end of your current billing period, so if you cancel on the 15th and your month runs through the 30th, you still have full access until the 30th.
No fees for canceling. No explanations required. Apple's subscription UI is deliberately low-friction.
What happens after your subscription ends
As soon as the billing period runs out and you haven't renewed, bank syncs pause. The app stops pulling new transactions. If you try to refresh, you'll see a short banner explaining the subscription has lapsed.
From that point, there's a 7-day grace window. During the grace period, your bank connections are kept in place, waiting for you. If you resubscribe within those seven days, everything picks back up cleanly: your banks are still linked, sync resumes, no re-linking needed.
After the 7 days, if you still haven't resubscribed:
- Your Plaid bank connections are purged (disconnected on our side)
- Automatic transaction imports are fully stopped
- Your existing accounts, transactions, and budget history stay put. Nothing gets deleted.
- The app stays open in read-only mode — you can browse and edit existing records, but adding new transactions or accounts requires resubscribing.
If you come back later and resubscribe, your historical data is all still there. You'll just need to re-link any banks you want to sync again, because the old Plaid connections were cut during the purge.
Restoring your subscription on a new device
Got a new iPhone? Reinstalled the app? Sign in with the same Apple ID you originally used, and your subscription should recognize automatically.
If it doesn't, go to Settings in the app and tap Restore Purchases. That asks the App Store to re-check what you've paid for and refresh the subscription status. Takes a few seconds.
If Restore Purchases still doesn't find an active subscription and you're sure you should have one, email support@basisbudget.com. Usually it's an Apple ID mismatch (signed in with the wrong Apple ID) or an App Store sync lag.
Running into something weird with billing or your subscription? Email support@basisbudget.com. Real humans, usually a same-day response.
